This moving piece was written by Sophie – Jasper’s mum. Those of you have cared for child being treated on Ward 3 will recognise Medic Mum.

Medic Mummy - My Unqualified Journey

Medic mummy is an unqualified nurse, a physiotherapist, a respiratory doctor, a dietitian — trained not by textbooks, but by experience, instinct, and love. I’ve learned to read blood results, administer meds, and recognise the signs before they become emergencies.

Medic mummy is a walking alarm clock, a diary bursting with appointments, medication times, and specialist calls. I know the names, the numbers, the dosages, rattling them off like second nature, because they are.

Medic mummy has her consultant on speed dial and her pharmacy on first-name terms. I know which days to collect prescriptions, when the bloods are due, and what each beep of a machine means.

Medic mummy knows the back of an ambulance better than some paramedics. I’ve stood by my child’s side during his procedures, held his hand through transfusions, and memorised the layout of more hospital wards than I can count.

Medic mummy is tired. I’ve aged in a short space of time. The weight I carry is invisible but constant, the sitting on edge, the waiting for results, the hope that tomorrow might be a good day.

Medic mummy still loves the outdoors. But now I’ve learned how to balance life and risk, joy and caution, because with no immune system, every trip becomes a risk assessment. Yet Medic mummy still shows up, determined to give her child the world, safely.

Medic mummy didn’t choose this life. But I’ve chose my child. Every single day. Fiercely, fully, and without pause.

Because above all, medic mummy is just a mum. A mum who loves so deeply, I became the medical team my child needed and never looked back. There are several medic mummy, daddy’s caregivers out there. I hear you ❤️
