Following training in General Paediatrics she spent 4 years working, with her family, at a Mission Hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo. On their return they moved to Newcastle upon Tyne where she took up a post on the Paediatric Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) unit, specialising in transplanting children with immune disorders. Mary has been the Clinical Programme Director since 2010 and became an Honorary Professor in 2023.
She has pioneered the use of treosulfan in conditioning chemotherapy and the use of a specialised technique to remove T cells to prevent graft versus host disease, so that a tissue type mismatched donor can be used when no matched donor is available for a patient. This has transformed clinical practice because every patient now has a donor.
Mary loves being part of a large multidisciplinary team making a difference to the lives of these children and their families and enjoys the collaboration with colleagues around the world striving to improve these outcomes.
